Spoken Word poem

This is a short spoken word poem about the creative process that a lot of people (including myself) go through. Being creative or making any form of art can be challenging at times. It is often hard to find the motivation, especially when everyone else you see, especially on social media, seems to be way better than you. Sometimes, you just can’t create right now, but that’s okay! It’s all part of the process. The important part is not to give up; eventually, pick up your pencil and give it another try.

Enjoy!

An empty page in front of me

I sit there with my pencils, markers, and watercolor

With the hope of creating something

The page is daunting

There are so many possibilities

How do I even start?

And so, I decide to look online for inspiration

However, that’s a bad idea

Instead of inspiration, I become demotivated

I see so many artists creating masterpieces

Works I could only dream of creating

I put a few lines on the paper

But they feel too stiff and unnatural

And so I erase them

I try again, and I erase them once more

Try one more time, and although I am not happy

I decide to continue

“Trust the process,” as people say

I continue laying pencil lines down

Outlining them with markers before picking up the paintbrush

I pick out a few colors and put them down

And I look at what I have done so far

I hate it

I don’t feel creative

I feel like I’m stumbling through the dark

I tell myself, “Maybe now isn’t the right time”

I crumple the paper and toss it out

And put away my supplies into drawers

Where they will be for a long while

I guess I’ll try again some other day
